Assignment Details

Your Team has won a bid to develop a Fire Strategy covering each of the build phases of a new Thrifty Class submarine. There will be 5 Thrifty Class boats built, each with an estimated Unit Production Cost of £960,000,000.

The boats will be built in the UK by civilian contractors. Hence the Fire Strategy shall detail the client’s responsibilities under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 (RRFSO) to reduce fire risk to the construction workers so far as is reasonably practicable. In addition to the life safety objective of the RRFSO, the client also requires that the Fire Strategy include cost effective recommendations for features to protect the boats from the damaging effects of fire.

As part of your scope of work, you are required to provide a preliminary Outline Fire Strategy Document for your client by 4pm on Friday 26 th June 2015

The report should document:

• Your intentions / approach

• The scope of your work and any limitations

• An identification of any up-front issues

• Any other issues which you feel the client should be aware of at the beginning of the project

The Fire Strategy is to be structured in a logical, concise manor. For each construction phase the Fire Strategy should cover:

• Prevention measures

• Detection and Alarm systems

• Escape provisions

• Asset protection measures

• Means of extinguishment

The client has the following constraints on the project:

• Build strategy cannot change

• Must maintain the build schedule

• No changes to the internal layout, although additional escape scuttles can be provided if required for particular design stages.

• Design for the minimum cost

As with any engineering project, a mix of engineering judgement and analytical studies will be required. Therefore in the development of the strategy an appropriate level of analysis will be required to overcome a problem and decisions made should be adequately justified.

Contribution of group members

Remember this is a group task requiring an approximately EQUAL contribution from all group members. It is therefore vital that everyone plays their part and each group should also submit a breakdown of the distribution of work with a brief description of the work performed by each group member.

Assessment Strategy

In general, each member of the group will be awarded the same assignment mark. However, failure by any member of the group to contribute properly may lead to assignment marks being distributed based on team member contributions. This could lead to individual failure of the assignment whilst other members of the group pass.

Submission Details

This assignment should be submitted via email and through Turnitin by the deadline given above. The word limit is 3000 words (+/-10%) per student. This excludes footnotes but includes quotations. The word count must be printed on the top right hand corner of your work.

• You must demonstrate that you have met the learning outcomes

• As you construct and present your answer, consider the assessment criteria

It is your responsibility to ensure that your work is neatly and accurately presented. The work must be:

• 1.5 or double line spaced

• Ariel 12 point font

• Justified

• Page numbered

• On A4 paper

• Margins left and right 3cm

• Attached to a cover sheet.
