Pivot doors are an attractive alternative to the standard barrel hinge door used in most common applications today. Pivot doors work on hardware attached to the floor as well as the header, this hardware can accommodate a much larger and heavier door. Until recently pivot doors have been used primarily for institutional applications such as correctional facilities and asylums.
Recently builders have seen a surprising increase in the popularity of the pivot door in residential applications.
Pivot doors come in a wide variety of sizes and materials. They can be made of wood, steel, glass and one manufacturer claims to make one out f a composite material. They can be used in just about any application you can imagine, both residential and commercial.
The key element of a pivot door is the hardware. There are five types of hardware configurations, the “off-set axis pivot”, the “central axis pivot”, the “intermediate pivot”, the “side jamb” and the “asylum pivot”.
1.) The off-set axis is very similar to the standard door hinge in that it is made up of two pieces. The top pivot is attached to the top of the door and the header and the bottom pivot is attached to the bottom of the door and the finished floor. This hardware comes in two sizes, ¾” and 1 ½”. These measurements refer to how far away from the centerline the hardware is attached or “off-set”.
2.) The central axis is attached to the pivot doors, dead center. The central axis has two pieces of hardware, with one piece attached to the top of the door and one piece attached to the bottom of the door. When installed correctly this hardware is almost completely concealed except for the floor plate portion of the bottom piece.
3.) The intermediate pivot is only used with top and bottom pivots and are non-load bearing. It is used similarly to a barrel hinge, is installed midway up the jamb and used to stabilize tall or heavy doors.
4). The typical application for the side jamb hardware is where a pivot can’t be attached to the header, such as frameless doors or doors with a jamb that is not sturdy enough to support a taller or heavier door. The side jamb configuration may also allow room for wires to run around the doorway.
5.) Asylum pivots are primarily found in institutional applications such as correctional facilities, hospitals and asylums, thus the name. The typical asylum pivot has an incline to the edge which is designed to prevent suicide attempts through hanging. Pivot doors with the asylum pivot often come filled with lead. These doors are used in hospital environments where MRI and x-ray equipment is being used.
When installed in a traditional setting such as a single family residence pivot doors are a unique and somewhat eclectic addition the home. Installed correctly they can add charm, they tell visitors to your home that you think a just a little bit different than the guy next door.
