Hi, This sounds very similar to a project I completed for one of the largest UK supermarkets. They wanted to tap serial data from their checkout barcode scanners which were connected via RS232 using a data tap and a USB-to-RS232 adapter plugged into the Raspberry Pi. The Raspberry Pi would then send the codes to over the ethernet interface to an SQL database running on a separate server. I still have the original equipment used for this task and source code to simulate the remote RS232 device so I can commence very quickly. In this case the data is to be saved to a csv file. This can be either on the raspberry Pi itself or on a separate device. I would propose to discuss the project in a little more detail before milestone timescales can be finalized.
