PCB Design for LED Lighting

Hello, I have designed an automotive head lamp prototype that uses power LEDs. I have placed these LEDs in series and supplied them from a BOOST converter. I have experience with designing circuits with LEDs. Normally the DC-DC converter that is used for supplying the LEDs has a voltage feedback control. But for this particular design a current feedback control is needed. You will need a metal core PCB do dissipate all the heat and a radiator attached with the PCB Also the size of the PCB is impotent These are my expertise: I have 8 years of product design in the automotive industry. I am an expert in: - Dc - Dc converters - USB charging - accelerometers, gyroscopes - GPS and GSM - LCD Displays - LED power calculation As a Layouter I have 5 Years experience. I am an expert in : - Power Dissipation Calculation - EMC Rules - Impedance Calculation - Manufacturing Rules I have made Layout for ARM processor. Work also with BGA footprint. I have done projects even on 10 layer. So I know how to build a layer stack up. As Layout and Schematic software I am an expert in Eagle, PADs, Zuken. Hello. Lets make some calculations for the worst situation with 4500 lumen. Lets take some basic LED 0,5 W with 12 lumen and 120 angle. The size is 3,5 mm x 3,5 mm i.e. S = 12,25 mm2 We need the 375 LEDs to get 4500 lumens. Your pcb S = 18870 mm2. Theoretically (only) we can fit 1540 LEDs. But we need only 375 LEDs + current drivers etc. Also we need to calculate the heat but it is another story. Regards, Anton.

I suggest to work with high power LEDs like those found in the new Green power traffic lights! I would follow that road if I take the design.

I have already designed various PCB boards for LEDs. One of the latest project was a Lamp for Operation table being used in hospital. The project was designed on Aluminium PCB. I can deliver the required result as I already have hands on experience on the subject.

I chose this project because it attracted me, I know exactly what this project needs to be perfect, it needs on-line feedback, that means that the current limiting will be totally monitored with a micro-controller and then the micro-controller adjusts the current in a closed loop control system. Why not then to add some more features to the project like : 1- analog Light dimmer using the micro-controller 2- temperature monitoring of the temperature of the system using on-board temperature sensor embedded on the micro-controller itself,so that to protect the system from over-heating 3- the system can work on a wide range of inputs from 7V AC/DC to 20V AC/DC With all these features you should have think of the cost, the micro-controller cost will be 2 $ and that is nothing. In over-heating condition the system will behave according to the manufacturer instructions / whether to dim the light to decrease the heat or shut down the system .
