The purpose of this assignment is to have you perform a critical intercultural analysis of a CONTEMPORARY social/political issue (such as: Rent strikes, COVID-19, BLM, #MeToo, #SayHerName, or many others). Social/political issues are at their core, intercultural, because they are struggles over sites and contexts of power. In this essay you will use what you have learned in our course to analyze a social/political issue through the lens of intercultural communication. You will need to define the social/political issue using credible citations. You will explain how power operates within this intercultural context as well as how identity and history shape the sides of the social/political issue. You will ultimately advocate for or against a particular course of action with regard to the social/political issue. As we have learned, once you begin to see the operations of power in intercultural communication, you hopefully develop a sense of social justice to repair and transform inequity. Advocacy and coalition are part of becoming a competent and critical intercultural communicator. For instance, you could detail and historically contextualize the issue of police brutality and focus on how this is an intercultural phenomenon. You could use a critical approach to unpack the different ways in which explain how policing is deeply and fundamentally connected to power and Whiteness. In order to do this, you would provide examples of policing that demonstrate your claims. You would take a position on what to do about this issue, guided by activists and credible sources that have done work on this before. You might finish up your essay with calls for social justice informed by the Peace Imperative and the Ethical Imperative. Please do not copy this example exactly. As per usual, your essay should be organized with an introduction, clear thesis, transitions, at least three main points, conclusion, and a cover and reference page in APA. In order to perform your analysis, you will need to summarize the social/political issue that you will analyze and cite your summary. You will need to provide a literature review (summary of the Intercultural Communication theories from class that guide your analysis as well as other articles that fit within the area you are focusing on) that includes readings from class as well as 4 outside articles from the CSUEB library to help build your theoretical framework. Group your literature review into themes that can clearly map onto your main points. Focus on the theory espoused by the authors you chose (perhaps you focus on Critical Perspective, Identity, and the Differences-Similarities Dialectic). Then after you have explained your theoretical framework, analyze the social/political issue in your main points using the theory you have defined. Explain your position by backing up your claims with scholarly evidence. The goal is to convince the reader to adopt your perspective on the social issue and explain how it is/does intercultural communication. This assignment will be 6-8pgs (not including cover/reference page) and should contain an introduction, body, conclusion, a cover page and reference page all in APA, and combine knowledge of all concepts discussed this semester.
