Install Microsoft Word on Ubuntu

MS Word does not have a true headless mode , but using wine and Win32::OLE in a Perl script you could do something provided you could account for all possible issues that could arise. For instance, if a docx file requires a password to open the process would hang waiting for the user to enter a password and not quit gracefully with out additional work to detect a hung situation. Since your outputting as unformatted plain text, .docx files are simply a zipped file with the text encapsulated in XML. You could unzip and strip all the extraneous XML easily with a shell script much quicker and easier than running an instance of Word without having to mess with wine+word or additional programs.
