Somone to teach me how to chome linux files on my server...

Hey, I just bought a web hosting company. Unfortunately I am totally overwhelmed by how much I don't know anything about it. It's on a dedicated server and running Redhat Linux. So I need someone to urgently show me (through [login to view URL] which is free) how to change ownership of files because when I try to modify some files via FTP it tells me that permission is denied. I assume you'll be using a console like Putty or any other one is fine. This is really urgent so I'll take anyone who responds near first.
