Export a Gmail mailbox - set up Godaddy email

I have an old Gmail apps email account that I want to move to a free plan I have on my Godaddy account ( as it's costing me each month). I need to download and retain a copy of the emails in the original mailbox before I cancel the Google apps account. And then set up that email address in Godaddy (where the domain is hosted) so that I can keep getting mail from it.
