Probably the pics are messed up or maybe the raspberry. Guess volts/levels between both are not normalized.

Hello, I am an expert in Embedded systems and experienced with the raspberry pi, I2C communication and microcontrollers including PIC and AVR. Your issue sounds like a timer overflow or similar. My process to resolve the problem would be to review your software and run simulations if necessary to determine the cause.
