Alter some Images

Hi, thanks for looking.

I'm looking to get the attached symbol modified in such a way that starting from just beyond where each of the three legs branches out from the center, the black gradually shifts color to green, blue, and purple for each of the three legs. It would get gradually lighter through the spiral, with the last part of the spiral being solid. I've attached a sketch of what I'm looking for that I hope will help. I don't have the time to learn Photoshop (or the money to buy it) and I'm here after futzing around with GIMP enough to know that I don't know what I'm doing.

Also attached is a pic for a source to work with. Yeah, I know, it's a JPG. I hear the chorus of derision now at my providing a raster source, albeit reasonably high-quality. =) This is for my band and mostly going to be used for stickers, shirts, and small website graphics so being able to blow this up to mammoth proportions isn't as crucial of an issue as some projects. I don't ever see this being used for print media.

However, I'm willing to entertain the idea of making a vector version of this. I know the time, and ergo the cost, would be more for this. So, I'm looking for proposals on just shading what I've got, and for making a vector version that I can use for whatever. For the vector I'd like both black-n-white and color versions.

Finally, I understand the time and effort that goes into these kind of projects and having freelanced myself in the IT industry, and I know your time is valuable. It's because of the two disparate aspects of the job that I'm not listing a $ on this, but let's talk and I'll be reasonable.
