I started writing Android apps in 2009. I've written two major GPS/locaiton based apps. One -- Intelligent Reminder, currently available on Google's Play Store -- is a location-based "to do" reminder; and the other Commuter Alert (not yet available on Play Store, but soon to be ... but I can get you a functioning version upon request), is an arriving-at-destination alert app for commuters. Both of these apps provide background GPS location services; both provide reliable location alerts; both utilize the Google Places API, and, both consume a minimal amount of battery.
