Greetings, A very interesting and involved product. This is a quite complex product involving electronics, sensors, robotics (dynamics of motion), embedded software - and all this needs to be put into a well packaged design. Your document is very well written and explains most of the stuff very clearly. I think overall it's doable - though has two major challenges - the battery size constraint and the capability to follow the user properly - both of them are non-trivial and require good amount of work. I can get you working protos - the hardware and shipping cost can be on actual. I have good expertise with these areas - please see my profile for details. I would love to do this project, however would like to tell you that the two challenges I mentioned are potential risks in terms of what best can be achieved and will have to be mitigated as we progress. Hello, my name is George Bouris. I have 20+ years of experience in hardware and software development for the industrial sector. Your project is really interesting, but your budget is VERY limited. The minimum realistic cost for the development of it will start from 20x your budget and should be flexible, because alternative methods, at least for the sensing of the operator's intention to move, have to be tested and more than one prototypes must be built. Anything less will be a waste of time and money. In my opinion, the best approach requires the following steps: 1. Calculation of the minimum operating time, based on the luggage weight and the capacity of the battery that TSA allows. 2. Decision on the various mechanical options. 3. Decision on the pull-sensing mechanism. There are a few options, but not the speedometer/pedometer solution that you propose. This method requires a minimum of a few steps to calculate the speed and communication between the operator and the luggage, which is unacceptable for this project. 4. Design, construction and testing of the required electronics. 5. Construction and testing of the final product. 6. The last 3 steps may have to be repeated for testing different approaches. 7. The above steps have to be repeated for both luggage types.

Its really a great idea, i suggest that instead of using a capacitance sensor, we should use two piezoelectric pressure sensors. When you are pushing or pulling a bag, you apply pressure on the handle, this pressure is picked up by pressure sensors and micro controller sets the direction and speed of wheels accordingly. When you want to steer a bag to left or right, one side of your palm applies more pressure than the other, so the two sensors are aligned horizontally. If both sensors have same pressure, bag moves forward, if left sensor has more pressure than right, the bag takes right turn. Using four pressure sensors may make it more effective. This project involves lot of trial and error. The bid i made is for design only. Please contact to discuss further.
