A code/script for matrix operation/algorithm

I need a code/script for an easy to execute program based on ANY programming language as long as it works correctly and easily. The objective is to create many matrices based on a data set of connected variables and then calculate a network density for each matrix. The matrix creation and calculation should be performed automatically for different categories of observations in the data set. It is simply a program that automates a set of procedures. More details: I have a large set of items for different years. In year n, item xyz is connected to m other items. The program needs to create a matrix for item xyz that includes all items in the data set to which xyz is connected to. The matrix will be of size m by m and will show connections between the focal item xyz and other items in year n. Then the code needs to calculate the extent to which the items are connected to one another. Thus, the program will need to create a matrix and perform the calculation for each item in the dataset.
