Afghanistan is an emerging democracy that has experienced significant tumult. Through all this tumult, it has retained a common characteristic of polities traditionally based on tribal fealty: respect for elders. Pashtun Afghan male elders are called Speena Zheera – “White Beards”, a term of great respect. Challenging the decision of an elder, even when the elder is wrong, can be seen as disrespectful.
