I have involved in high traffic web application like core banking. I have used different types of Frameworks for my web application depends on users and traffic. For large user application we have created own frameworks using JS, XML and PHP. Middle level application I Have used lite PHP framework like Codeigniter. Most of my CMS application have used PyroCMS, A Codeigniter based framework. Which will give a MVC security to your CMS.
