I've been a developer for 20 years and I've worked with all types of databases. More recently I've been working with MySQL and PHP. There are a lot of tricks you can use with your code, the way you manage DB connections, the timing of various cron jobs, the way you structure you tables, indices, the way queries are written, and so on that can dramatically improve DB performance. With large tables, sometimes it is good to split up data between volatile and archaic. I'd have to see what you are doing to get into specifics. Needless to say, I've done this type of thing many times in my career. I've dealt with DBs that were storing 100ks of records in a single table per day and in a couple of cases I was able to speed some of these inserts and later queries up by over 10X... even 100X in some cases. It all depends what you are doing. I'd like to check out what you have and I can tell you more about what I might want to do.
