Configure public nameserver zone on BIND - open to bidding

BIND server is currently on static NAT to a public IP address. When doing a dig or nslookup against the server for it's own A record, it returns the private NAT IP of the server instead of the record listed in the A records for the zone. (dig and additional details will be provided if project is accepted) Assistance is needed double checking the current configuration of the server's overall and zone configuration. Also interested in general configuration best practices--such as is it better to have the DNS server on a public IP with iptables instead of behind a hardware firewall with NAT? Budget may be expanded to include security audit and any recommended configuration found during this project. Thanks

Hey there, Well your zone configuration will have to be looked at as well as the forwarding rules. Other than that, you'll have to tell me whether it should be an open resolver or not. This should be blocked if you don't intend to have it function as an open resolver. Let me know :)

Hello, From your project description, what I have understand your server is behind NAT. When you nslookup, the outcome of result is private address instead of public IP address. Please correct me If I'm wrong. It looks like happening due to in-correct configuration of bind. If you want to place your DNS in DMZ or assigning it Public IP address and we need to harden your server. Please let me know your availability. So we can discuss more on this and resolve your issue. Thank you, Jagdeep Gil Skype - Jaggyd86

I'll fix your issue with Bind's zone file, nameservers, etc. As well as looking through your configuration to make sure it all looks secure. As for hardware firewall vs public server I'd go with a hardened public server with strict iptables rules. David

I am in the hosting business for 15+ years and among other this covers various DNS setups so I am sure I can help you set it all correctly. You have named your server on the NATed private IP with a public name instead of a private one and that's causing your problem. You can run it this way with NAT but in most cases this is just complicating simple matters. I always did and do run the DNS services on public IPs on servers that have only a minimal set of other services running and access to these other services (ssh, control panel) is limited to addresses I access the server from. In all the years I have have not a single problem with such a setup and absolutely no security problems. The only important thing to do is to patch BIND as soon as any security patch is issued, but this applies for a server behind NAT also. Best regards, Tomislav Crnicki Croatia, Europe

Over 7 year in Linux services experience. I can fix all your issues in no time. Just tell the network structure, what services you to make them public and I tell you what to do. First of all you need a static public IP address.

Hi, I've worked as an infrastructure engineer for about 4 years and one of the things i was responsible with during this period was configuring dns servers on unix systems so I think I am a good candidate for this project. I've also handled firewal and LAN configuration for small and medium sized environemends (up to 20 physical servers hosting around 40 virtual machines). Please contact me if you are interested in working together or if you have more questions. Best regards,
