We have been having problems with the disk space on our server. Our /root 20G keeps getting full and crashing the server, but we have a /home directory that has 1 T unused disk space. We need help understanding the problem and fixing it - which I assume involves adjusting partitions. You will not have access to the server, but we can relay any information back and forth with you and you will need to walk us through the steps to investigate the problem and safely back-up and adjust the partitions

First thing I would do is check wether you use LVM or not and determine the sizes of the root directories (/var, /opt, /usr, /tmp, /home ...). It's apparent /home is enormous compared to the other filesystems, so we're gonna balance that a little bit. Go into single user mode: - Resize the home partition to its smallest possible size, for example (numbers are fictious offcourse): resize2fs -M /dev/sda2. This probably needs a filesystem check beforehand. (1.6TB /home filesystem becomes 120 GB) - Shrink the partition or logical volume to the filesystem's size + extra space ( 1.6TB partition becomes 500 GB) - resize the home filesystem again to be able to use the extra space (120 GB /home filesystem becomes 500 GB) . Now you have space for LVM extents or extra partitions. Then you create new partitions or logical volumes for the big root dirs or enlarge root (LVM)

i've been doing DevOps work since before it was even a thing (i'm a developer by trade, and a sys admin out of necessity). i can help try and diagnose your issue by having you run some commands and report back the output/results, and hopefully get you through this.

I have extensive hands on experience on server installation and routine maintenance, especially with the management of disks space. Feel free to contact me. We can also discuss preventive measures to stop your root partition from filling up.

I have some experience with working with low-free-space drives (my own), and with setting up partitions for Linux, and setting up servers. This doesn't look like a difficult job.

Hello, my name is Joshua. I am an experienced Linux System Engineer representing my Michigan based IT Management company. WE specialize in System Engineering and Specializations and would be very interested in assisting you with the re partitioning of your server. However I did notice one important point of interest in the description being you do not wish to provide root access. Based on the type of re-partioning required, it would be required as we will most likely need to boot the server in single mode allowing us to make these changes without the risk of disk failure. Please let me know if you are interested!
