THE CONCEPT OF BRAND
Introduction
Business and trading have been there since time immemorial. It all started with the barter system and involving very few items of extreme necessity, and now look where we are! Have a look around entire range of things that you possess came from some kind of business process and via trading. Bit there is also a much bigger and more important difference all these things are branded, they bear the name of the company which produces/manufactures them.
So why, in the first place, is branding needed? Well, the need arose when people felt the compulsion to highlight the articles produced by them as against the other competing products in the same category. Also, they hoped to crate a following and trust via their brand. Better for the consumers and best for the manufacturers. So far so good. But the concept of brand today has come back to bite the very proponents of its theory, today, people associate themselves with the “brand” and not necessarily the product. With advancements in the fields of process and quality, it indeed has become formidable task to differentiate the products based on actual parameters, which means brands are now playing a bigger role than ever in deciding consumer preferences. This can be dangerous and may hit the manufacturers in an unpleasant way, as a little maligning of the brand image can see the sales of not only the affected product under the particular brand nosedive.
