Your goal will be to write a software which gets a video file (MPEG2 TS), and analyzes audio in this file.
The software will simply write to stdout, each 5 seconds (time interval configurable by commandline parameter) what is current audio volume in dB (decibel).
Example output:
0s:12dB
5s:25dB
10s:13dB
15s:59dB
...
The software will work in Linux and will be opensource so you can reuse some GNU GPL code if you need.

As far as I understood the project, the use of ffmpeg (libavcodec and libavformat, both at least LGPL) would be suitable. Using this strong library the software is ensured to be fast and lightweight.
