Your final paper on the topic will be 6-8 pages long, typed, and double-spaced.

You must create an organized argument with a key point that connects your approach to or how you came to an understanding of the project and the site through at least two readings that we did over the course of the semester. Which readings influenced your thinking on the site and your topic? Which readings gave you an example that you used to be a scholar of this site? Which readings helped you learn a method of writing or an approach to a relevant culture that was new and enlightening?

You will write an organized essay with an argument by choosing three different themes or three aspects of the same theme to explore in your essay about how the site connects to at least two readings that we did.

Example: “My approach to the site at Timbuktu borrowed especially from the reading by Black in the attention to religious heritage over time and to White in the search for artistic models in her analysis.”

1) At least one must be a reading from a scholarly text by an author (like Wharton or Kessler, for instance). [see attachment]

2) Of the two readings, one may be a Scriptural reading. Or the second one may be from a more popular journal (Time or Smithsonian magazines, for instance) in our selections if you wish.

It is not sufficient to say, “This reminds me of the Gospel of John.” You need to be explicit about what part of John and in what way his text inspired your approach or your understanding of a site. The same detail will be necessary for any source that you site in that I want you to explain the how and the where and the why the source inspired you.

In a logical and orderly fashion, you will present your argument.

1) Paragraph one will introduce the site and topic you chose and end with your thesis sentence about how it relates to at least two of our class readings.

2) Paragraphs following will analyze those aspects of your site that were influenced by the readings as you describe in your thesis. Note that your discussion has to be in-depth, descriptive, and detailed. You will have a logical progression of ideas with orderly transitions from one idea/paragraph to the next. Support your ideas with details from the texts and from your own project to explain.

3) Your concluding paragraph will restate the thesis.

Your sources will be cited in the text using footnotes and the Chicago Manual of Style format. For the format to use in the footnotes vs. that used in the bibliography, see the resource listed above for the slight changes in placement of author name, of commas, etc.
