Contest Brief

Hi guys!

We are a new lifestyle brand that designs high-quality and exciting americana-inspired casual wear for socially aware young adults. Initially, the target group consist mainly of university students. In addition to our online store, we are developing interesting infographics for our coming website. The intention is to create a website in which many contemporary figures and concepts from the different fields of theory and culture are given a short surveys in the form of data visualization. Although the information given is fact-based and researched specifically for this purpose, the visual presentation will be rather playful, colorful and fun.

Now, what we would like to get is a cover illustration about the French philosopher Michel Foucault.

STYLE: The illustration should imitate the style of the cover illustrations of GTA 5 (examples attached). We do not want to see any guns or the like, but the visual language should be similar: fresh and abundant colors, almost lifelike and yet stylized looks, and a touch of playfulness and fun!

SUBJECT: There are numerous photos to be found on the net about Foucault (examples attached). The illustration however should not be based on any single existing photograph, but should be completely original. There is no need for a full-length portrait of Foucault though – the illustration can focus on the head and upper body. It would be nice if there is something surprising, eye-catching or just fun about the subject – his pose, expression or the like. What is however important is that he is easily recognizable as Foucault.

Our website is still to be launched, but it is going to be built on Shopify. We are looking for designs that are fresh and interesting, and that are specifically designed for the web (and not for print).

Happy designing!

Hi there, I am starting to ask myself if it's legal to use celebrities for advertising. Painting famous people can be art, when selling the painting itself but you have to get a license from the celebrities when you start selling any products with their faces.

I didn't stumpled upon it at first when reading "cover illustration", but let's say you paint a portrait of Prince or Brad Pitt and start using the picture for fashion advertising, don't you think there's a good chance to get sued?

Just a thought because you wanted that noone copies any photos to avoid violating the copyrights of the photographer... but have you thought about violating the personal rights of the famous people you want to use to sell your products?

      Hi there,

I am sorry when you think I am spreading mistrust, my intention was to help finding an overview of the involved copyrights and the terms of this webpage.

You say you hope that everybody will understand that you are responsible for all legal consequences?

1 hour ago I have chatted with the support to ask who exactly is responsible for the usage of an illustration.
The answer was: "... that the artist(!) has the responsibilities of all possible legal consequences that arise by using the illustration" and not the employer.

That's why I wanted to discuss the copyrights with you, because the winning artist will be responsible for all your(!) usages now and in the future.
And the winner has to grant you full commercial copyrights and will be responsible for it.

So I thought it would be a good idea to look if using Foucaults face is legal and everybody would be able to grant this rights?

This was meant as a help.

      Have a nice day

Hi. Ok, no problem. What you heard from the support staff is quite weird, because the artists cannot have control of the future use of the illustration. However, I am sure that layers and the legislation in general understand this. You cannot be responsible of something you have no control over, right? Anyway, when it comes to this case, I have explained the planned use of the illustration: it will be used in connection with studies, commentary and surveys of not only Foucault but of a number of other influential characters as well.

Hi, this is a great contest, please wait for my entry. And I see that you have given 4 stars to a buch of entries by BayroutteSdmf like #6 , and that it's clearly not an illustration but rather a collage of various pictures, you can clearly see that the head is from a 3D model with a filter applied to it, Foucault is wearing a suit that is from a real life picture (you can notice it in the texture of the fabric) and the background is another picture with a filter applied. So, my question is: should I make an illustration from scratch or can I use various sources and make a collage and apply filters to it so I make it easier?

Hi and thanks for your comment. This is a tricky question. Of course, my first choice would be entirely original artwork and that is what we are looking for. But I understand that because the subject should be recognisable, the artist must use some photographs in order to achieve likeness. Still, the work should bot be based directly on any single photograph or artwork as such. The similar reasoning goes for the background as well. The background should be natural for Foucault, but most of the illustrators would need photographs for this. And yet the background should not be based on an existing photo as such, but should contain elements that make it original.

When you talk about cover, and not wanting for print... I'm lost. Is it a cover for a book ? for a site on Michel Foucault ? about the funny side of the portrait, do you look for a sexy appeal like in GTA draws or do you want something more conventional, meant for a philosophical study ?

Thanks for your comment/question. By cover I mean the page the visitor sees first when coming to our website. The website consists of web store and infographics about some key figures of culture and theory. So there is going to be concise 'surveys' not on Foucault but other influential characters as well, such as Luc Boltanski and Bruno Latour for instance. Anyway, the landing page features Foucault. Second, we are not looking for a sexy appeal. What I like about the GTA5 posters is their life-like nature connected with a cartoon-like simplification. Also I like the fresh colors and well-thought details. So when saying that we want GTA-style illustration about Foucault we are not looking the contents but the style. Hope this helped to clarify the issue.

Dear designers and illustrators. I regret of not been clear enough about this issue, as there have been indications of plagiarism. The illustration should not be based on any existing photograph or artwork. It must be completely original. Otherwise somebody can sue me of using their artworks.

Great! Well, I'm not sure about sealed, although I understand the benefits also. But when the contest is open and transparent, then I hope the entries are at least original. There is no specific size, as I hope I can either get the illustration as a vector file or I can make it to an vector file myself.

But as the illustration is going to be a cover picture - meaning it takes the whole screen - it should be made rather big I think, with a lot of details.
