Contest Brief

Hi everyone! I have a board game in the works titled "Gladiators of Dragon Isle". This is a realistic gladiator themed game in a fantasy setting.

We're at the point in development that we're acquiring the artwork for the gladiators themselves. This contest is to find a style that we like, and comes with a potential commission for the remaining 31 gladiators. Should you be commissioned for all gladiators, we would negotiate a rate but expect no higher than $100 USD / card. If that's unacceptable, please don't worry about participating in the contest. We would also expect a time frame of at least a gladiator/week.

The image must include the full body, be colored, and have a background of an arena and/or the sands of an arena. This background could serve as a template for each following gladiator, so your initial approach is important but it will potentially require less work for each following gladiator.

I'm aiming to have the gladiators look like real people in this world, not cartoony or overstated versions. Aiming for more subtle effects to show their personality.

The one I'll have you complete:
Myev - A tough female Half Human-Half Orc Warlord. (You can go either Half-Orc or Orc, either works.. that's entirely up to you)

She should portray an aura of leadership, strength, and power. The kind of fighter that's survived fight after fight, and earned her position rather than inherited it. This could make her appear a little rough, with the possibility of scars/hard eyes or something like that to showcase that she's seen battle.

Each gladiator has a unique ability that they can use which largely defines that character and the kind of fighter they are.
Myev has an ability called Might of the Bear: This should make her appear tough and have charms, bones, furs or something resembling a bear.

Her sexuality should not be focused on. (No large bosom, or bikini clothing ect.). She should be a powerful orc warlord who happens to be female, and not a female who happens to be a powerful orc warlord if that makes sense.

Her face should not be covered, as she should be prideful and not hide behind a mask. Her face should also be relatively pretty, but pretty for a half-orc/orc..maybe not by human standards. A hard, strong face would do.

I've attached an image that resembles the concept we're chasing the closest.
I am not expecting you to match this style/level of quality, I want you to bring your own style to the design...this is just the kind of orc that represents the character we're after the best. Styles could include cell-shaded, comic style, inked, digital, realistic...whatever you think you can use to bring the character to life and make it look good..I'm fairly flexible.

I've also attached the board design so you can have an idea of the style/theme so far.

I look forwarding to seeing what you're able to come up with!!

Thanks!

Employer Feedback

“I ran a contest for a fantasy gladiator design, and Joko P. submitted a design with a level of quality superior to both competitors and portfolio. Well done! I hope we can work together in the future, and Joko would be a great asset to your team.”

Hello everyone! Thank you all for your participation, the amount of great entries was amazing.

The winner of the contest is Entfry #31 by Joko P.

The other finalists that deserve mention:
    #28 by Anton N
    #23 by Oleksandr V
    #70 by Irlan B.

The decision was incredibly hard, and was not unanimous...I would have been fine accepting any of these entries for the win, and will keep your contact information for the future. Thanks again!

This would be easier to decide if there was one image that was better than the others, but the sheer quality of a handful of submissions has made me quickly realize how unqualified I am in making this decision. I'll be showing my favorites to the core playtesting group in the hopes that we can come to consensus shortly. THANK YOU VERY MUCH, I did not expect this amount of amazing submissions, and I wish I could afford to reward you all.

We're a little into the last week of the contest, and I've received some great images so far! I want to thank everyone who's submitted up until now. I will run the contest to it's conclusion, but if you're considering participating you should know that the competition has done a great job and it will take a skilled artist to take the win. If you're just starting out or looking for an easy win, you won't be able to compete with the images so far.

You're a thief. This is the commissioned work of Manthos Lappas. I know, because I was the one who commissioned him for the design. I own the image you're attempting to submit as your own to win my contest. It's people like you that make things hard for artists, and you should be ashamed of yourself.

You made it blind so no one would aid you in spotting con work . that's what the con artist aimed for . good luck with that.

This is my first contest and it was the first thing requested, so assumed artists preferred to have their contribution remain unique.

I spoke with a few experts in the industry on how to spot these images. Rest assured, I've researched every image submitted so far, and will continue to do so carefully.

I didn't think I would need to clarify this, but the images must be designed by you and not publicly available. Two of the submissions so far were stolen from other artists and have been reported. As to the other artists, Thank you! I'm sorry you have to deal with this kind of competition.

What is the desired dimensions and resolution of the final products. Are they digital, or to be printed?

    1. Fletchoo

The image is intended for print, on roughly a 2.5" x 2.75" area of a card. The higher the resolution the better...but for the purposes of this contest the goal is to find an artist who can portray a style I enjoy, so their is a fair amount of freedom in regards to exact size. Should the image win and both parties are interested in continuing, that's when the exact sizing and template needs to match for all the images.

hello, the pose should be static? The person should look "in the chamber"?
or is it not important and it is possible to make it dynamic (in the process of leaping, hitting) in order to reveal the character?

    1. Fletchoo

You can make it as dynamic as you'd like, they do not need to have a static pose by any means. Using their stance to reveal the character is a wise approach and completely acceptable.
