Contest Brief
Illustrate the excerpt below. The winner of this competition will be selected to complete 10 additional illustrations for the full children's book. The winner will receive $1,000 for the 10 additional illustrations. If you are not interested in completing the 10 additional illustrations for $1,000, please do not enter the contest. Also, please note that the main character in the story (Malik) is an African American middle-school aged boy who lives in an urban city.
ILLUSTRATE THE TEXT BELOW:
Malik is frustrated! He just received the worst writing project in his class. All the other kids had cool topics to write about, but Malik was stuck with, "What makes your hometown special?" He had no clue what made his city special. There was trash almost everywhere he looked, large amounts of poor people, and every time his mom turned on the news it was a story about how dangerous and horrible his city was. "What's so special about that?" he thought.
"I know!" Kim said.
Malik looked around but didn't see anyone else outside.
"Over here!"
"Who said that?.... Am I going crazy?"
"No silly! I'm talking to you!"
Malik couldn't believe his eyes. Flying around him was a talking butterfly! And, she seemed to be able to help him discover what was so special about his city!

Are you kidding ?? That drawing is completely unprofessional! I'm really sorry for the time that participants have spent for this competition! It is not envy ,i'm saying it as a drawing teacher with education.

Thanks for the feedback. Yes, we are very happy with the selection! The students liked the design style and felt this version of Malik would be most relatable to their peers. Again, we are very appreciative of everyone's time and will be posting other competitions for those interested in participating again.

In terms of feedback for your specific designs, @Miyakilera students liked your character; however, they did not like the woman on the side of the wall and thought the city you created looked a bit too deserted. @Aisbeth, students loved the bright colors of your work; however, they felt your version of Malik was less original (i.e. many thought they saw this type of character in other cartoons/stories). Also, they felt he was a little too juvenile to appeal to their peers. Hopefully this is helpful feedback and we wish you both well!

Hi All, Just for clarification, I can give you input and my thoughts; however, the final ratings of these illustrations are NOT judged by me. They are judged by my students. The current ratings have just been updated. We will choose the final winner in 3 weeks. Thanks again for all your submissions!

Hello, do you have certain dimensions in mind? Landscape (horizontal)? Vertical (portrait)? Square? It would help me to know how to use the space to the best advantage. Thanks in advance!

Hi. I understand Malik live in USA, but, does he have to write about his hometown in Africa? Is one illustration for the whole excerpt or like a comics strips? Thanks

Contest Holder - 8 years ago
Hi! No, he does not have to write about Africa. He has to write about his hometown in the US, where he currently lives. An please give an illustration for the whole excerpt; not comic strips. Thanks!
